Challenge Accepted: Make Friends!

Some parents are really proud of their kids. Some parents might even say that they themselves learn from their kids as they are teaching their kids. For me, it's DEFINITELY not that case. Usually, my parents are groaning in the background of my life! For instance, once I accidentally smashed a hole in the wall because I just needed to catch that ball in the house. Another time I just took a whole gallon of milk from the fridge and put it on my parent's bed. Just a whole gallon. I literally cannot explain why I did this, but the reaction on my parent's faces was of genuine concern for my mental stability. And finally, I almost put a fork in the toaster when I was way too old to have been making that mistake. Needless to say, they were legitimately terrified of me going off to college. But hey, I'm still alive and I have only lost my room key once! Worst part: I found it right after I paid for it (with my own money calm down people), but shhhhh don't tell my parents or they'd be so disappointed.

But if I've ever done anything for them, it was getting them hooked on How I Met Your Mother. Pretty big deal in my eyes.

The quote of the week is from my favorite show, How I Met Your Mother! The quote starts at 1:16.

Quote:
"Whatever you do in this life, it's not legendary unless your friends are there to see it."

The thing with this quote is that it I think it resonates with people of all ages. Sure, maybe it's more meant for a younger generation but I can imagine myself at the old age of 90, wheeling around the geriatric home dominating at bridge. But for it to be a really awesome game of bridge, I gotta have my elderly crew there to see me crushing my opponents and taking names!

For an introvert like me, it's easy to find this quote as really, really inspiring. The previous quotes I've looked at on this blog have been a little more on the somber side, but this is a simple reminder that you have the best time with your friends. When you're going to do something awesome or even something mundane like eating your 1,000,000,000th panini at Redifer, it's just better with a friend by your side. The friend helps define the moment. I'm not saying that being alone or doing something alone is a bad thing to do. I love being alone! In high school, people would literally show up at my house and drag me out because they knew if they asked me to come out there was a fair chance I would say no. And you know what, I was usually happier with my friends. And more, if something momentous is happening, have people who are close to you because they want to share in your happiness too!

The reason I also love this quote is that it's from Barney Stinson. Barney has to be the most outgoing person to ever exist (well, I guess he doesn't technically exist, but you get my point). But in this entire sequence, he's not actually with his friends and after this final piece of advice he gives to the youngsters, he runs off to rejoin the group. For a character who has a mysterious life and could easily do whatever he wanted with his wealth, it's really significant that he still believes his legendary moments are the core of the moments.

Before moving onto the literary equivalent, I would like to complain about my very inconsequential issue. Now that they moved HIMYM to Hulu over Netflix, there are commercial interruptions during my viewing experience! What is this?! My time is precious Hulu and 30 seconds advertisements feel like an eternity multiplied by eternity when I'm watching my show. So like, a lot of eternities. Please go back to Netflix. Please.

Ok, now onto the literary equivalent: Harry Potter!
"There are some things you can't share without ending up liking each other, and knocking out a twelve-foot mountain troll is one of them"
I love this quote with my whole being. I find it extremely witty and simultaneously touching. This quote sort-of diverges from the HIMYM quote and this these people aren't actually friends yet! But, a moment brought them together and they remained friends for life. And I'm sure even Barney would have to admit that this is a legendary moment! I mean come on, they knocked out a troll! I just smiled to myself thinking about the moment in the book (by the way, this quote is NOT in the movie).

Everyone, this post just touched upon my favorite television show and my favorite book series. I need to sit down because I'm just too happy. However, I'm just warning people: nobody ask me which I like better! It's like trying to split an atom. The result is not good. Have a good day with your friends.

I'm Not Crying...It's the Ninjas Cutting Onions!

Sometimes I'll just start a blog post and I don't even know where it's going. I just hope I find it along the way. When I say sometimes, I, of course, mean all the time. Sometimes I'll start a sentence, and I don't even know where it's going. I just hope I find it along the way. — Michael Scott (@carellquotes) August 7, 2013 Twitter: @carellquotes   I'm sure we've all heard the phrase "carpe diem" and that we should all "seize the day." But the phrase is tossed around so much it might as well be a salad. Ok. That was so bad. I'm so sorry you had to read that. Anyway, I don't think I've ever remembered to live in the present because of this quote. I remember to live in the present because of none other than Andy Bernard! So, of course, this week's quote is from The Office! If you're not ready to cry, well, too bad. Quote: "The weird thing is, now I'm exactly where I want to be. I got my dream ...

What are you even doing? Reading this blog post? Reading!? Why!?!? Stop it. STOP IT. Still reading? Well if you like reading sooo much, then surely you've read Fahrenheit 451 ? It's inevitable that we burn our books and stop reading. You could just listen to this, you know. Okay, don't get me wrong. I seriously, seriously  love reading and books. Right now I'm reading The Constitution of the United States and Selected Writings of the Founding Fathers . Maybe you yawned reading that title. But trust me, you're doing anything but yawning when you read some of these fiery speeches. The Founding Fathers knew how to spit fire! When I read Patrick Henry's oh-so-famous quote "Give me liberty or give me death" in context, I was ready to jump on a horse and charge into battle. But then I remembered that I have the physical capability of a potato and I'm in a country that has already been liberated for nearly 250 years... My roundabout point is that ...
